Why do the Scout Programs of Adventure Scouts USA have a Scout Promise instead of a Scout Oath? Print
Our Scouts have a Scout Promise because a promise is voluntary.  Our Scouts choose, organize, and lead their own meeting, programs, and activities.  Choice is a central part of our Scout Programs.  The choice to be a Scout is entirely that – a choice.  We expect our Scouts to be as good as their word and do what they say they will do; however we do not force them to take part in any particular activity or promise to do anything they do not want to do.  An Oath is far more serious.  We want our Scouts to understand a promise they make before they make it, rather than swearing an Oath to words they do not understand and had nothing to do with crafting.
